The Farmer’s Market is back!
Thursday mornings are a busy time in Lake Geneva because the Farmer’s Market at Horticultural Hall is open again. Locally grown produce like asparagus, lettuce and spinach greet the patrons in May followed by seasonal fruits and vegetables as they become available in local gardens. Not only is produce available, but there are cut flowers to arrange or potted plants to put in the garden. The begi
nning of the market season is a sure sign that spring has finally arrived and summer will soon follow.
Inside the Hall are local artists who are selling their handcrafted items such as soaps, jewelry and knitted Afghans, all of which make wonderful gifts for hostesses or other special occasions. The market is open from May to October, 8am to 1pm in the historic Horticultural Hall which was built
in 1911 for the gardners and foremans of the large estates around Lake Geneva in order to show off their gardening talents and expertise. It was very competitive among the estates as to which produced the most glorious flowers or the largest fruits and vegetables. In many ways, the farmer’s market is a return to the original purpose of the Hall which was to promote horticulture.
Be sure to mark Thursday mornings on your summer calendar!
