Biking in the Lakes Area
The lakes area of Walworth County explodes in the summer with recreational activities on land, water, and even in the air with the sight of multi colored hot air balloons floating silently over the tree tops. While the emphasis seems to be centered around the lakes, it’s also fun and invigorating to hop on a bike and explore the many picturesque bike trails in the area. Depending on your endurance level, you can choose between a leisurely ride along a relatively level, wooded path or a challenging, hilly, rocky ride on a mountain bike path, all within minutes of Geneva Lake.
Just several miles north of Lake Geneva on Hwy 120, you can connect easily with the White River Trail. Springfield’s historic Depot, now known as the Pedal & Cup, is conveniently located at the midpoint of the White River Trail. This charming restored depot not only offers bike rentals (or bring your own), but can prepare you for your bike outing with gourmet coffee, smoothies, and mouth watering sandwiches. Trail passes can be purchased here, or at four stations along the trail. The 12-mile crushed limestone trail follows a former railroad bed, meandering about 6 miles west to Elkhorn, and 6 miles east to Burlington. With resting spots along the way, this trail has a slight ascending and descending grade, and is enjoyed by children as well as adults.
For a more adrenaline-inducing, adventuresome ride, the bike trails in the Kettle Moraine State Forest are located about 15 minutes north of Lake Geneva just off of Rt 12 and can’t be beat for views, excitement, and a thorough workout. More than 20 miles of mountain bike trails span 21,000 acres of forest and lakes, showing off peaks and valleys carved out of ancient glaciers. The John Muir Trails are extremely popular, with one-way routing and numerous loops traveling from 2 to 10 miles. At the extreme end of the riding scale are the Emma Carlin Trails, located nearby. The LaGrange General Store/Backyard Bikes and Ski welcomes you to the forest on the intersection of Rt 12 and Hwy H, and rents the tougher, more sophisticated mountain bike and accessories necessary for these trails. Pre or post ride, sit back and indulge yourself with their varied menu of healthy, gourmet food and drink.
