Landlords, Mark Your Calendars Now: New Law Takes Effect February 1st

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Mandatory in Multi-Family Units as of February 1, 2011

Mark your calendar now for February 1st – the date when mandatory CO detectors becomes effective for virtually all homes in Wisconsin. The new Wisconsin Statute 101.647 requires virtually all homes to have carbon monoxide detectors beginning the first of February. Back in April 2010, all existing multifamily residences were required to do so, and the new law expands the requirements to ALL single family homes and duplexes. The requirements are parallel to those for smoke alarms, making it easier to remember how and where to install these life saving devices. Exempt dwellings include those without attached garages, fireplaces and/or no fuel-burning fireplaces.  Although failing to install CO detectors doesn’t result in a fine or penalty, the greatest fine is the loss of life and health. So, the next time you’re out and about, pick up several new batteries for those smoke detectors and buy a CO detector for your basement and for each floor of the house.

It’s always a good idea to replace your smoke detector alarm batteries annually – since it’s the New Year it’s the perfect time to take care of these checklist items because next New Year’s you’ll remember to ring in the new – and replace the old!
