Local Racer Earns a Spot at Motocross National Championship from Loretta Lynn's Ranch

Posted to Debbie Cobian

Lukas Cobian, a local Lake Geneva teen is seeing his hard work pay off. The 16-year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 30th Annual Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Lukas competed against over 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1,386 qualifying positions.

Lukas, with the help of his KTM sponsor Southeast Sales in Milwaukee, EVS, FMF, Scott, Thor, Fuel Clothing and his parents who help pay his way to the races has had the opportunity to pursue his dreams. He has had a very successful season with over 30 wins this year at area tracks such as Aztalan, Byron and Sunset Ridge. He has spent the last month training at the Jimmy Weinert training facility in South Carolina and is looking forward to the National Championship event at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

“The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” said Event Director Tim Cotter. “A win at the Amateur Nationals gives a rider instant national notoriety and can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career.”

Most of America’s top professional motocrossers, including James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana and Jeremy McGrath, have won AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn’s. The race is so prestigious that in 2009, teenage stars Dean Wilson, from California, and Eli Tomac, from Colorado, were awarded premier professional contracts for the 2010 season. This years race runs from August 1-6, 2011 in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

I’ll post an update after the big race weekend! Lukas will be back from a month of Motocross boot camp next week before he leaves to Tennessee. Cheer him on to a successful (and injury free) week of competition. We’re proud of you Lukas #219!
