Day 159 of 365 Things To Do in Lake Geneva, WI: The Riviera

Posted to Area Attractions & Events, Geneva Lake Area

Located on the eastern tip of the shores of Geneva Lake is the beautiful and historic Riviera, fondly referred to by the locals as “the Riv.” It was built in 1932 on a man-made peninsula that was constructed by driving 280 pilings into the bedrock. 1935 to 1946 was considered the “Big Band Era” and the Riviera was known to be a popular venue, playing host to a number of great musicians including Artie Shaw, The Dorsey’s and Louis Armstrong.

In 1980 the building was restored at the recommendation of a citizen’s committee. The Riviera is now home to a number of small shops on the lower level, and a ballroom and civic center on the upper level which is frequently used for weddings, proms and other special events in the community.

The Riviera docks located on the lake side of the building are home to the Lake Geneva Cruise Lines which run from the first of May through the end of October, providing guided tours of the lake along with historical information about the homes located along the shoreline.

In June 2004 the Driehaus Family Fountain was installed and dedicated in the courtyard in front of the Riviera. The fountain is a replica of the Angel of Waters Fountain that sits in New York’s Central Park.

This beautiful building on the shores of Geneva Lake is full of history. Why not consider walking through the lower level, buying yourself an ice cream cone, and sitting in the grass surrounding the courtyard and just soak it all in?
