Put more Green in your Wallet – Even on Your Next Coffee Run in Lake Geneva!

Posted to Green Living, Rentals, Sharon Clark

Do you share in the coffee addiction with the rest of us? You may not realize but there are now great offerings that allow you to save on that daily expense.  On average, 16 billion paper cups are used in the United States each year, according to www.aboutmyplanet.com. Just imagine how many trees had to be used to make each of those cups. A great way to save our earth from losing more trees and keeping more trash out of our dumps is to simply BYOM (bring your own mug). That’s right; bring your own coffee mug the next time you head to your favorite local coffee shop.

Many local shops are even rewarding those who do BYOM.

  • Starbucks of Lake Geneva offers 10 Cents off
  • Caribou Coffee of Lake Geneva offers 10 Cents off
  • Geneva Java of Lake Geneva offers 20 Cents off
  • Deakin Isle of Elkhorn offers a 25% discount

If you drank just one cup of coffee each day for a year and brought your own mug each time, you could save more than $30.00/year. For those who drink more than one cup a day… you could save even more! Be sure to cash in of the benefits of going green.

Be aware of your “foot print” in every aspect of your daily routine in the Lake Geneva area to help provide a cleaner and safer planet for future generations. From recycling paper during the holidays, turning your heat down a few degrees in the winter or simply BYOM in the morning for your coffee runs can pave the way to a happier environment and have a fund at the end of the year to treat yourself to something extra. You’ll have a great morning knowing you did your part!

Going Green this Winter in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Posted to Green Living, Sharon Clark

There are many ways to go green and support your environment. It may not be so easy, however, in the winter months. Here are a few tricks to stay green this chilly season:

- Make sure that your windows and doors of your home are secure without leaks. Seal leaks and cover windows with plastic to keep your heat in and energy bill low.

- Turning down your thermostat by just a couple of degrees can save you money on your energy bill as well as conserve the energy itself. Instead, make use of your slippers, sweaters and throws to stay warm.

- Install energy efficient lights, such as florescent lights. They use less energy and can save you lots in the dark winter months. LED lights are great for your Christmas tree and holiday lighting.

- Take your family and friends out for a day in the snow! Go snowshoeing, sledding and/or cross country skiing, which lets you get great exercise and you don’t have to use fuel or electricity to have fun.

- Use plain sand instead of rock salt on your walkways and driveways. Salts can be harmful to your pets, animals and vegetation once the ice thaws.

- Also, keep recycling during the holidays where mass consumption is inevitable. Remember to recycle your wrapping paper, boxes as well as plastics from your dinner and snacks.

Going green can be just as easy as any old routine. So if you are new to being environmentally cautious, just try a few of these tricks during the holidays and hopefully it sticks.

Green Ideas for Santa

Posted to Debbie Cobian, Green Living

With the holidays quickly approaching, I’ve been thinking that the best gift we can give our children and grand children is a healthy environment and a clean planet.

Here are some simple Green ideas for the holidays:

  • Buy a decorative, potted pine tree to plant outside in the Spring.
  • Save energy by using LED lights. If we all switched we could save a lot of electricity. There are many different lighting options now, even some that are solar powered.
  • Consider recycled alternatives for gift wrapping including gift bags (preferably made from recycled paper) which can be easily reused again. Another idea is to paint or have the kids color on paper trash bags to make a really personal package.
  • Use last years Christmas Cards to make gift tags for packages or buy plantable gift tags. Found at stores like Target and Walmart, plantable gift tags look have seeds inside and can be planted directly into soil.
  • Consider rechargeable batteries. There are new USB Cell batteries that plug into the USB port of your computer to recharge.
  • Gift cards are a great Green choice because the recipient can choose exactly what the need. No fuel wasted on returning gifts or waste on gift wrapping and boxes. Consider wrapping in a recycled Altoid tin.

Gifts from the heart and time spent with family and friends are the gifts I cherish most. I’m looking forward to relaxing by the fireplace with some eggnog and spending time with my teenage sons and all of my family. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas!
